My [27F] partner [26M] thinks I'm being ridiculous and pathetic over a "stupid caption"
This is a tough subject for me because of the current situation, and I quite literally just feel numb and like I have a major ick. Maybe this is break-up worthy, who knows.
Context: my oldest sibling has been diagnosed recently with a type of cancer and has a link (the website that starts with Go and ends with Me. Reddit doesn't allow me to use such terms thinking I'm asking for help lol). Naturally, we have all been sharing that link and have been super grateful to all the help. The truth is that the amount is just not enough especially for someone living in the US with no insurance, and we are losing momentum and need more because whatever we have raised does not even mark a dent in the journey (yes we are looking into other options like Medicaid, loans, etc. we aren't just expecting handouts and just hoping the GoMe does it all. We are all working our own jobs and trying).
Well, my SIL posted the GoMe on her social media story and my partner added her story to his. Completely great, I'm grateful. After losing momentum after a few days, naturally we keep posting in hopes that we receive even just a bit more help. So I ask my partner if he can please post it again, and he does. But this time after he posted it I was like "wait, maybe it can help even juuuuust a little bit if he puts his own caption on the story (Instagram btw) that this is his BIL. Because realistically, if he posted the first time with no context as to how my brother is related to him, my partner's followers might just see it as a random person and be like "oh, that sucks". I thought that maybe there was *veeerrry* slight chance, even a 1% chance that if my partner deleted the story and reposted it but this time with the caption saying that the GoMe is for his BIL, MAYBE some of his followers might gravitate towards helping even a slight bit because they now know the connection between my partner and my brother and don't just see it as a GoMe for some random person that my partner knows and gives no context about. At least that's what I thought.
Apparently, my partner had an issue with this and refused to repost it because it's "just a caption" and "it won't help. If people wanted to help, they would have already the first time I posted it." The thing is that it's not like his entire following will view his story the first time or have a means to help. I thought that maybe if new people see it or the same people see it but NOW have context as to who the GoMe is for (aka my partner's BIL) they miiiight want to help. AGAIN, ALL of this was literally just based on a "MAYBE". That it MIGHT help.
That was my ENTIRE point. The fact that MAYBE my brother can receive a little bit more help. Even if just $1. Even if it's just one follower who helps. I genuinely thought adding the caption could help, because realistically some people are just like that and might not feel the need or desire to help a random person that my partner is posting without saying how they're related or connected.
He just kept saying how unnecessary it is, and that he knows his followers (I'm sure he still talks to all 200 of them I guess) and that they won't help, that adding a small stupid caption won't help. And honestly, I just felt heartbroken. I thought I was asking him to do such a small favor even if in reality it's not going to end up helping. But my whole point was that even if we don't know it can help, it MIGHT, and that he could at least try.
Instead, he just got defensive, saying that he already posted it once and that two of his family members (who I'm very close to) already contributed so why am I implying that he isn't helping?? I NEVER said that. I even personally messaged his family who helped letting them know it means so much to me that they helped and I thanked him for reposting the story too. Both times BTW I had to ask him to repost it. I'm not entirely sure he would have done it on his own. He would have probably just liked my story about the GoMe and that's it.
It's like he thought that I expected every single follower to give their entire checks and that if they don't, it's all his fault if we don't meet the goal because he didn't add the caption. (BTW, literally just a simple caption like "My BIL has been diagnosed with cancer. Anything helps!"). He said I was acting that way, when all I asked for was to just add a small detail that MIGHT help my brother get even one more penny.
It got to the point where I just cried, because it felt so cruel. I just felt like.. why is this even an argument? Why are you even debating if it will actually help or not? My brother has cancer, a small caption giving context as to how he is related to you MIGHT help.. and even if it doesn't, WHY NOT TRY? He just kept saying I was pathetic and ridiculous for crying all for a stupid caption.
I thought after a few hours of it blowing over, I could tell him how I felt genuinely without arguing. But nope, same explanation all over again. I made drama over a stupid caption, and that the caption wouldn't have helped and I'm acting like it's all on him to meet the GoMe goal, when I NEVER did that. My entire point the entire time about the "stupid caption" was that it might help even just 1%. It's disheartening because if his family or anyone's family that I know was going through this and even adding a tiny detail in my post can at least help them 1%, I would do it in a heartbeat. I wouldn't even question it, much less mock the person asking me to add the detail and insult them over it. This just feels insane to me. Like I genuinely don't know of anyone who would refuse to help in that minor way.
