Teal'c first appearance in SGA

Is it just me or his first appearance in SGA ep "reunion" is off. I remember when I first watched the show (which I did before SG-1) and I thought he must have been the "wise" character that Sam looked up to and was really close too. But in SG-1 Teal'c isn't like that at all and him & Sam have a good working relationship. But honestly aren't that close outside of work, they have each others back in battle but aren't hanging out during their free time. Nothing wrong with that. But it is betrayed way differently in this one scene. The writers correct this in Midway and he is normal Teal'c again. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this. And maybe if there was a behind the scenes reason.
