Drugs are one of the most misunderstood areas of human behaviour
This can apply from any angle. From a harm perspective, people can certainly underestimate the harms of substances, subsequently ruining or significantly impairing their quality of life. On the other hand, if certain drugs are used with proper intention, set, setting and integration, they can have profound impacts on people’s lives. Of course, certain drugs have no tangible benefits upon an individual’s life (e.g. cocaine, crack, meth, etc.), but drugs such as MDMA, weed, ketamine and psychedelics can all be used responsibility and with respect. Such drugs can actually be used to explore reality (as opposed to escapism), leading to incredible benefits.
I feel as though the legal system has it all wrong and all drugs should be decriminalised, as prohibition is a health threat through adulteration and/or stigmatisation, etc. The narrative needs to change and people need to appreciate that certain drugs can be used as tools to explore one’s psyche and consciousness. Such insight has the potential to radically transform their lives. In spite of this, I am also aware that drugs can have significant harm potential. Even those that can be used with great success should be treated with caution, e.g. those with predisposed/underlying mental health conditions should not indulge in psychedelics or arguably any drugs, unless under appropriate, professional supervision.
Ultimately, drugs can be incredible, but need to be treated with the utmost respect.
What do you think? :)
