Any local lowboy operators here?
Just wondering if there’s any lowboy operators on this sub, particularly ones that are local and home daily. I move heavy equipment for an excavation company to our various projects, equipment as big as a Komatsu 490 excavator and John Deere 460 haul truck. Just seeing what everyone’s getting paid out here.
For reference, I make $29 an hour right now (started at $28 but got bumped up after ~5 months at my first annual review), been at this company for roughly a year and I honestly enjoy it. Start at 6:30am, usually home by 5:00 most evenings. Monday-Friday with weekends and holidays off/paid. However I feel like I should be making a little more due to everything that I’m responsible for, like loading/unloading myself, load securement, following permits, etc etc.
As far as my background, I had nearly 3 years of Class A driving experience before starting this job. Started at food grade tanker, then went to dry van and reefer for another company. No prior lowboy experience and minimal load securement experience. I’m a heavy equipment operator in the National Guard part time so I knew how to run machines so I didn’t need any training on that aspect.
I also live in NW Ohio, relatively low cost of living area. I’m able to support my wife and daughter on one income which I’m grateful for, and also have my own house.
We have annual reviews at the end of each year so I’m really thinking of trying to push for more money. I’d like to push for a hefty raise because there is a lot of risk involved in this type of job and this position has struggled in the past with this company (I believe they’ve had 5-6 past lowboy guys in the last 7 years so it seems to be a high turnover position).
What’s everyone think I should ask for? What are my other lowboy guys making out here? Thanks in advance
