28M engineer looking to start graphic design as a side hustle.where should I begin?

Question

I'm a 28-year-old engineering graduate from a core branch and have recently started taking graphic design more seriously as a potential side hustle.

I can use Photoshop and Canva comfortably and enjoy creating logo designs, magazine/editorial layouts, and presentation designs. Most of my work so far has been for personal learning rather than clients.

My question is: what are the minimum skills, portfolio pieces, and tools I need before I can realistically start taking on small freelance projects?

For those who began as self-taught designers:

- What did your portfolio look like when you landed your first client?

- What type of work is currently in demand for beginners?

- Is Photoshop + Canva enough to get started?

I'd love to hear from people who started design as a side gig while working in a completely different field.

Thanks!
