Is it rude if I follow people I barely know from my university on LinkedIn?

They don't know me, I don't know them, but we have the same almameter. But in my uni, this has been a normal thing to do. But is it appropriate? I don't wanna have a bad first impression on them, especially with my full legal name and identity on the line
