Chronic Hives (now manageable)
I wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else who’s struggling with chronic hives.
I never had allergies or hives growing up. Then, when I was 27, I got poison ivy for the first time. It was severe—large, painful rashes that lasted for weeks. Eventually, it cleared up with a course of steroids, but about two weeks later something unexpected happened: I started breaking out in hives.
Those hives stayed with me on and off for years. It was one of the hardest periods of my life. Summers were the worst because heat would make them flare up constantly. I stopped doing a lot of the things I enjoyed because I never knew when I’d break out. Unless you’ve dealt with chronic hives, it’s hard to understand how miserable and exhausting they can be.
I went through allergy testing and tried what felt like everything, but nothing gave me clear answers. My body seemed to be in a constant state of hypersensitivity after the poison ivy, so the testing wasn’t very helpful.
I also tried just about every antihistamine available. Eventually, I came across a study where some participants with chronic hives were treated with higher-than-standard doses of levocetirizine under medical supervision. After talking with my doctor, I followed that approach consistently for about six weeks. Slowly but surely, the hives started fading, and eventually they disappeared completely. I stayed hive-free for years.
Then, this year, I developed a skin infection after using a hot tub, and once again it triggered chronic hives. This time they lasted a couple of months. I worked with the same treatment approach that had helped me before, including levocetirizine and famotidine, and thankfully the hives gradually resolved again.
I’m incredibly grateful that I found something that worked for me. I know everyone’s situation is different, and what helped me may not help everyone, but I wanted to share my experience in case it gives someone else hope or a conversation to have with their doctor.
If you’ve never had chronic hives, it’s difficult to appreciate how much they can affect your life. They aren’t “just a rash.” They can take over your daily routine, your sleep, your confidence, and your mental health. If you’re going through it right now, you’re not alone, and I truly hope you find something that works for you too.
