Respect for Senpai
Is there a respect for the teachings that Senpai pass down to lower ranks in your training area? This weekend I helped with a grading in another club. (For context I am 3D & the student is 4th kyu). A student who I know was going for the grading - and passed, but did not have very good chakuso. I gently passed some information on how it could be improved by the next grading. He started with excuses on why it wasn’t presented correctly. I told him that if any senior rank gives him feedback he was to respond with “yes senpai or sensei” and take it on board. He retaliated by pointing out a piece of jewelry that he thought I shouldn’t have on. I’ve always treasured the pieces of knowledge imparted on me by my seniors and senpai.
Is this how juniors treat senior members in your clubs? Has respect wavered in recent times or in some clubs or areas? Am I out of touch?
What would you do in this situation? I’m looking for input from senior and junior kendoka.
