Feeling stuck between medicine, law, engineering, and other career paths with a biology degree
I’m currently finishing a biology degree, but I’ve become increasingly unsure about what I want to do afterward. I originally planned on pursuing medicine, but given my uncompetitive stats, I’ve started questioning whether the length of training, debt, workload, and delayed income are worth it for me personally.
Since then, I’ve looked into several very different options, including shorter healthcare careers, law school, accounting or finance programs, medical sales, and going back for engineering. The problem is that every path seems to have a major downside, and I feel as though if I’m consciously switching to something else now, I need to make the right decision.
Medicine offers strong job security and high long-term earning potential, but it requires many more years of intense training. Law could lead to high pay faster, but the outcomes seem heavily dependent on school placement and landing a competitive job. Engineering seems more practical and versatile and honestly something I would enjoy, but switching into it would require substantial additional coursework, a few more years of school. Shorter healthcare programs seem appealing, but some have geographic limitations or lower earning ceilings. Accounting and finance appear stable, but reaching very high compensation could take a long time. Sales has a high ceiling without as much additional schooling, but the income and job security seem less predictable.
My main priorities are high earning potential, strong job security, reasonable work-life balance, and not spending unnecessary years in school. I understand that no career perfectly maximizes all four, but I’m having trouble deciding which sacrifices are actually worth making.
I also can’t tell whether I’m genuinely discovering better options or whether I’m repeatedly getting scared by the downsides of each path and moving on to the next one.
Any advice?
