Newfie Summer Fur Cut

I have an 8.5 year old Newfoundland who is being treated for thyroid cancer. She has been shaved on multiple areas of her body for medical care (neck, chest, belly, sections on all four legs). That, combined with not being professionally groomed for longer than normal have resulted in her coat being a bit of a mess. I’ve never done a summer cut before because I’ve heard it might not be the best for double coated dogs, but feel it’s medically necessary this year. Plus, she loves to swim and I’d like her to have as many opportunities as possible this summer since I don’t know how long she’ll be with us.

I’d prefer to not have her shaved to the skin all over. What should I ask my professional groomer to do? Thanks.
