How my government calculated that I only need $23/month to survive an engineering degree.

Rant/Vent

I just need to scream into the void for a minute because I am losing my absolute mind looking at the logistics of trying to get a higher education when you aren't born into wealth.

I am a female student, and I just got accepted into a top-tier technical university (TU9) in Germany for engineering. Getting in isn't the flex—everyone knows the real filter is the brutal weed-out classes inside. I want this degree. I’m already spending my free time pre-studying the STEM material ahead of time just to have a fighting chance of passing the exams.

But the sheer level of gatekeeping before Day 1 is actually comical. Let me break down the absolute circus I am dealing with right now:

  • THE UNPAID MANDATORY INTERNSHIP: To even be allowed to start, the university requires a mandatory pre-requisite internship. Local companies know they have students trapped, so they won't hire anyone for less than 8 weeks. So, starting next month, I get to do 40 hours a week of actual engineering-related labor for EXACTLY $0. Zero. Nothing. Apparently, landlords accept "academic passion" as currency now.
  • THE HOUSING MARKET IS A JOKE: I have to move out of my current place by the end of the month because the rent is soaring. I will literally be couch-surfing at friends' places while working this full-time unpaid job. Student dorms are a lottery you never win, and normal shared flat (WG) rooms are averaging $550/month. Oh, and the only cheap rooms listed for $250? They are all traditional conservative fraternities that straight-up told me "No" because they don't accept women. Brilliant.
  • GOVERNMENT AID IS A LITERAL INSULT: Since I stand entirely on my own two feet, I applied for the state student financial aid (BAföG). Because the system calculates your aid based on parental income from two years ago, the grand total they decided I need to survive? $23. A. MONTH. My parents physically cannot contribute a single cent to my life, but the government's Excel sheet apparently lives in a parallel universe.
  • THE ENROLLMENT FEE WALL: To cap it all off, the university demands a non-negotiable $440 enrollment fee by September 15th. If you don't pay, you aren't a student. If you aren't a student, you don't get the transit ticket, and you aren't legally allowed to apply for the flexible on-campus student jobs.

Look at the math here. I can't earn money to pay the $440 enrollment fee because I am locked into a 40-hour work week for free. Working a weekend job on top of that while literally not having a permanent roof over my head is a fast track to a mental breakdown. And working weekends during the semester is a death sentence for my grades because the exam phase at a TU9 requires every waking hour of study.

My entire strategy was to grind through the first semester, get top grades, and immediately secure merit-based scholarships for the rest of the degree. But the system is literally tripping me at the starting line because I don't have a magical inheritance to pay for the privilege of working for free.

Has anyone else broken out of this specific trap?

  • Did you manage to shame a company into paying you a tiny stipend for a mandatory internship?
  • Does anyone know if European tech universities have hidden emergency funds or hardship waivers for the initial fee that they don't put on the main website?

I am not giving up on this degree, but wow, the system makes it incredibly hard to pull yourself up when you're starting from zero. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
