Bad avatar help

I'm probably being an idiot but if anyone can help I'd appreciate it. I have a 360 e that I've set up bad update and then recently put bad avatar on and I did not have a HDD plugged into the console since I couldn't remember where I'd put it so I've been running games on an external drive and it's all been good. I have since found my internal drive and thought I'd stick it back in the console for some extra space and so it's not put somewhere else to lose it again. Problem I'm having now is the console freezes on the profile sign in screen where badavater does it's thing and only when I remove the HDD and restart the console does it work again. How can I keep using bad avatar with the drive? Thanks and sorry for the long post
