Do "we" need a lawyer, or just my partner?

My partner was involved in a domestic incident and keeps telling me "we" have to come up with a significant amount of money ($10k) to retain a lawyer. I was not there, and have only heard accounts from my partner and their father regarding the incident. I'm confused as to how this has become my financial responsibility. What say you, Redditors? Do I need to be coughing up the dough or letting them solve their own problem?
