What are your thoughts on this interpretation of ‘putting God first’ in relationships?
My boyfriend says that, to him, one aspect of ‘putting God first‘ means that if he believed God was directly telling him to do something or go somewhere. For example, through an angel, he would definitely obey.
He also believes that God may guide him through signs. If he interpreted something as a sign that God wanted him to take a particular course of action, he would discuss it with me, but he would not necessarily change his decision even if it might leave me feeling hurt, lonely, or unsupported. He has made it clear that he will never do anything illegal or harmful. For example, if he interpreted a sign as God telling him to move to another country, he would do so.
He is faithful, sincere, a good person who is well respected by others. My concern is how he distinguishes genuine divine guidance from his own interpretation, and whether there is room for shared decision-making when one partner believes that a decision comes from God.
For Christians in serious relationships, what does “putting God first” mean in practice? How should someone balance faith, discernment, and responsibility toward their partner? Would this concern you?
I’d appreciate your thoughts, advice and suggestions.
