Social media accounts should be tied to a government ID, and your real identity should be visible.
I think if you want to use social media, you should have to do it under your real name. If you’re willing to say something online, you should be willing to stand behind it.
Anonymous accounts have made it far too easy for people to harass others, spread misinformation, scam people, threaten others, and avoid any real consequences. If an account gets banned, they just make another one and keep going.
I know people will argue that anonymity protects privacy and free speech, but I think the damage caused by anonymous accounts outweighs the benefits. We don’t let people hide their identity in most parts of everyday life, so I don’t see why social media should be any different.
I think requiring a verified government ID and using your real identity would make people think twice before posting and would lead to more respectful and honest conversations online. It wouldn’t eliminate bad behaviour, but I think it would reduce it significantly.
It’s called social media not anti-social media.
