I didn't "get" the romance, am I missing something?
Hi everyone!
I recently finished Jane Eyre and was wondering if anyone could tell me what I'm missing with Jane and Rochester's relationship.
I loved this book, it was so beautifully written and I love Jane as a character. I felt so close to her reading it. However, I was not convinced that Jane and Rochester were in love. I found that I more so believed Jane, that her account of loving Rochester was true to her; but I never got the sense that they had romantic feelings for each other. My impression of Rochester was that he was kind of a jerk; I didn't pick up on any real affection in their interactions while she was, supposedly, falling in love with him.
It wasn't until them being reunited that I felt I understood these two characters together. Like when she sort of recreated the way that he teased her (or rather, was kinda mean) when she believed Rochester was pursuing that other woman (the name escapes me). But it was only then, at the end of the book, that I felt convinced they were two sides of the same coin, so to speak.
Did anyone else have that experience reading the book? Unconvinced of the love presented, but still trusting Jane, even though you're not seeing what she sees.
Or am I really missing something? And if so, could you help me better understand? I don't typically read classics, and did have a bit of a difficult time reading the book (I had to pause and look up a lot of words), so it's possible I missed something entirely.
