Jubilee’s Cantonese pronunciation is TERRIBLE.

This might need a bit more explanation. English is not my native language so there may be some grammar errors here and there.

So firstly, Chinese has some dialects, one of which is Cantonese, which is spoken by people in Hong Kong and regions in Guangdong. According to lore, Jubilee is from Hong Kong, and the devs made the decision to have her speak Cantonese Chinese for some of her voice lines, specifically the Hello voiceline and her ult.

I am a native Hong Kong citizen who’s lived in Hong Kong my entire life, and it was nice to see someone from Hong Kong fight in the Rivals battlefield. HOWEVER, I genuinely did not even think she was speaking Cantonese during her ult voiceline when I first heard it in a match today. It sounded more like Mandarin Chinese which is the version of Chinese that most of the rest of China uses. It was only when someone used the “hello” voiceline that I noticed she was using Cantonese since her pronunciation is sligntly better there. Emphasis on “slightly”. It sounded extremely “off key” on literally ALL the words, if that makes sense. It’s as if the voice actress heard those Cantonese phrases once, tried to pronounce it for the first time and the devs used the first take. Meanwhile Iron Fist who uses Mandarin Chinese has perfect pronunciation for all her voice lines, and so does everyone else who uses foreign language in their voice lines. I even had a funny interaction with my parents, where I told them “hey check out this character in Marvel Rivals, she’s from Hong Kong and speaks Cantonese” and they actually were offended when she said her ult voice line. 😭 Seeing that they fixed White Fox’s Korean pronunciation in her voice line, I hope that the devs notice this issue and actually update Jubilee to speak proper Cantonese.
