Why I still pirate music? Why are people angry with Sony decision on PS5?
Why I still pirate music? What is Sony doing wrong with PS5?
We all had been through era of early internet when we used to download music from Pagalworld. Before internet, we used to buy cassette and DVD for movies and music. We truly owned music.
Then came **Google play music** and **iTunes Store**. You could purchase music digitally and download MP3 format. Somewhere during 2017 we stopped owning music and shifted to streaming services.
Wanna listen something? Watch 20 seconds of unskipable ad.
I purchased music on Play store to avoid this. But they shut down this in 2021. And I lost access to all my purchased music. Turns out buying didn’t mean owning. It was just a digital license which could be revoked any time by Google.
But that thing didn’t bother me much because we had ad-free music on JioSaavn & WynkMusic.
But during 2023, we saw a rise in independent music creators. Most of their songs were not available on these platforms. So, I had to use YouTube for those songs. So I purchased YouTube premium. But somewhere down the line, I realised, I have to pay ₹300 every month to listen to same piece of me downloaded music on my phone. And if I didn’t pay them, they removed my access.
I cancelled the subscription in 2025. And for the first time in my life, I used iTunes to purchase a music. Payment was successful. I thought to transfer it to the android phone which I regularly use. But I didn’t got to download MP3 file. The same bullshit that buying isn’t owning, it’s just a digital license.
I searched online, how to download MP3 files. I found you can only do it through MacBook. So now I have to purchase their another product of around ₹2 lakhs. Just to download the music, I purchased.
I looked up online for other music selling services. But found none.
I finally decided that if the match is reached against me, I should not strive to be the moral person. I sailed the sea. If bike isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing.
Sony is doing same mistake by removing physical media. People have no faith left in digital license after **Funimation** incident when company removed access to personal library of anime fans. They purchased animes with their hard earned money and created library for them. But one day company decides to shut it down and you can’t do anything.
