Need Career Advice: Consulting Role vs Product SDE Role (Compensation) today is the last day for confirming it
Hi everyone,
I'm a final-year CSE student and I'm in a dilemma between two full-time offers.
Offer 1
Current offer is from a well-known consulting/technology company.
Compensation roughly includes:
- ₹9L gross salary
- Meal & broadband allowances (bringing total annual cash to around ₹9.84L)
- ₹1L joining bonus
- ₹1.5L retention bonus after completing one year
- Up to 10% annual performance bonus
- ₹75k relocation
- Standard insurance and other benefits
My manager has also mentioned that if I perform well, they may try for an early promotion within a couple of review cycles and additional retention incentives.
Offer 2
The second opportunity is from a product-based startup.
Initially they wanted to hire me as an intern, but after discussing my current situation internally, they created a full-time SDE role specifically for me.
The recruiter mentioned that they are currently thinking in the range of ₹12–13L fixed, and hinted that the normal SDE-1 compensation band is around ₹14L, although nothing is final yet.
The role is much more aligned with backend engineering and product development, which is the direction I eventually want to build my career in.
My Dilemma
Financially, the startup offer doesn't seem significantly better once I include joining bonus, retention bonus, performance bonus, and other benefits from my current offer.
However, from a learning perspective, the product engineering role seems much more attractive.
My Questions
- If you were in my position, which offer would you choose?
- How much importance should I give to retention bonuses while comparing offers?
- Is it reasonable to negotiate for around ₹14–15L fixed, considering my current total compensation?
- Do product startups generally provide better hikes and faster promotions than consulting companies, or does it depend entirely on the company?
- If your long-term goal is to become a strong software/backend engineer, would you take a slightly lower first-year compensation for better technical growth?
I'd really appreciate insights from people who have made a similar switch or have experience in both consulting and product companies.
Thanks!
