"Magic is really very simple. You just gotta want something and let yourself have it."
Two months. Two months is all it took for my entire life to completely unravel.
I have seven years of leadership experience managing high-end retail stores. I know how to run a business, how to talk to people, and how to hustle. But for sixty days straight, I was met with nothing but dead ends. I applied to over 200 jobs. I’m talking everything from store manager positions down to entry-level sales associates. Rejection after rejection. It was soul-crushing.
To make matters worse, my fiancée and I had just moved in together right at the start of this unemployment streak. The financial stress quickly bled into our relationship, exposing cracks we hadn't healed yet.
I love her fiercely, but she carries deep trauma from her past relationships. Because of that, she finds it incredibly difficult to feel, show, or receive love. I, on the other hand, am anxiously attached. I am the type of person who needs that emotional validation, someone who craves deep connection and reassurance to feel secure.
Whenever things got rocky, her defense mechanism was to immediately detach and run away to protect herself from getting hurt. She was so easy to lose.
Last week, we hit the boiling point. After two months of giving her 100% of my soul and feeling like I was getting back a fraction of it, I snapped. During a massive argument, I told her we should call off the engagement but stay together to work on our issues.
She took it as a total rejection. "If you're calling off the wedding, you don't want to be with me," she said, and told me she wanted to break up entirely.
I got childish. I was hurt, angry, and exhausted from feeling rejected by the corporate world and my partner. I snapped back: "If you want to break up, then pack your things and leave. I am tired of people coming into my life just to abandon me."
She left that day.
The silence in our apartment was deafening. I sat there wondering how someone who supposedly loved me could walk out so easily. But after hours of crying and thinking, the anger faded, and the truth hit me. She did love me. She was just terrified. And my ego had just destroyed the best thing in my life. I didn't actually want her to leave; I just wanted to feel loved.
I texted her a long, heartfelt apology. I didn't apologize for our problems, but I apologized for my childish behavior, my lack of patience, and my inability to see through her fear. I told her I was going to do the work to build a better foundation for us.
Her reply crushed whatever spirit I had left.
She texted back with laughing emojis, telling me I had destroyed any chance of us ever being together. She said I had just proved to her that I was exactly like everyone else who hurt her.
Later that night, I was numbly scrolling through TikTok alone in our empty home. A video popped up on my feed. A tutorial for a love spell.
My first thought was, No. Absolutely not. I can't do this. She would hate me.
See, I’m a theist. I believe in God, but I don’t think any single human book can fully capture what the divine is. My ex, however, is a devout Christian. She firmly believes witchcraft is real, dangerous, and sinful. We had spoken about it many times, and she always made it clear she stayed far away from anything occult. I knew that if I was going to bring her home, I had to do it the right way. I couldn't resort to magic. So, I swiped past the video.
But hours later, around midnight, I was walking down the street completely alone. The air was cold, the night was dead silent, and I looked up at the moon. Something inside of me just snapped. Desperation is a powerful catalyst.
Suddenly, a quote from a movie I watched a thousand times growing up echoed in my mind. In Halloweentown, the late, great Debbie Reynolds says, "Magic is really very simple, you just gotta want something and let yourself have it."
I realized I had been blocking my own blessings out of fear. I wanted my life back. I wanted my girl back. And I was finally going to let myself have it.
I rushed to Target. I bought everything I had seen in that video: candles, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, parchment paper, and red markers.
When I got home, I went straight to work. I started with a protection spell, using incense, salt, bay leaves, and a candle to clear the heavy, toxic energy in the room. Immediately after, I channeled every ounce of my longing, my love, and my desire into the love spell.
The second I finished, a wave of profound exhaustion hit me like a physical blow. My eyes felt too heavy to open. It felt like all the life force and vital energy in my body had been violently drained out of me. I collapsed into bed and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
The next morning, I woke up to a text. It was from her.
My jaw dropped. The tone of her messages had completely flipped from the cruel, laughing emojis of the night before. She told me she didn’t want to leave. She wanted to stay. She confessed that seeing me feel unloved had broken her heart, and she realized she had her own internal work to do. She said she needed to get to work on herself so that way she could love me as much as I needed to be loved when we do get married one day.
I fell to my knees in praise. The relief was overwhelming.
Flush with sudden confidence, I sat at my desk later that night, looking at the mountain of job rejection emails still sitting in my inbox. I figured... why stop now? I set up my space, performed another protection ritual, and then crafted a manifestation spell to conjure a job.
The very next day, three different hiring managers reached out to schedule interviews. I did all three interviews, and within 24 hours, the highest-paying company of the bunch called me back to officially offer me the position.
It has been a few days now, and I am still trying to process the sheer weight of everything that happened. I went from being completely broken, unemployed, and abandoned, to having a high-paying management career and the love of my life back in my universe.
We are taking things slow right now. She hasn't fully moved her things back into the apartment yet, because we both recognize that the trauma isn't going to vanish overnight. She needs space to heal, and I need space to grow. But the door is wide open now. She wants to come home, and we both know she will when the time is right. We are building it back better, piece by piece, on a foundation of real honesty.
I used to be a skeptic. I used to think the universe was just a cold, random place. But after what I experienced this week, I know there are forces out there we can barely comprehend. I just had to want it bad enough to finally let myself have it.
