"The Piano in the Tree"

For those of you who've read The Piano in the Tree, can you point me toward the real-life town, region, or historical area that's most similar to Korovinja? I'm assuming Korovinja is fictional, right?

This book has me completely fascinated, and I'd love to read more about that time period and that part of the world. I'm especially curious what historical events, places, or communities the author drew inspiration from.

I know I could always email the author, but I figured I'd ask here first in case anyone has already gone down this rabbit hole. It's driving me nuts because I want to learn more!
