Hitchhiking in Tanzania

Hi. I just wanted to ask about hitchhiking in Tanzania. Is it okay to be standing on side of road with thumb up and waiting for someone to take me(us)?

Is it normal to hitchhike?

We are two white guys trying to get from Kenya to Zambia with tent and not so much money.
