Alternate Squirrel Jokes Ending Idea

Discussion

This is gonna sound weird bc it's a loved classic episode but I never really liked the way the episode ended. It doesn't feel like Spongebob actually learned his lesson and only stopped making racist jokes about squirrels bc Sandy pretty much tortured him to near death to force it, and even then he doesn't even really learn anything as much as just make racist jokes about everybody (which yeah could be seen as a sort of better thing, laughing at everyone rather than specifc group but it still feels off). So I decided to come up with a slightly different ending that puts the onus more on the audience (who seem to be really bitchy in that episode) than Spongebob.

So everything goes the same up until Spongebob drops the mic and goes backstage, rather than being shocked the audience instead angrily grumbles to themselves while Sandy goes backstage to make sure Spongebob is ok after how the crowd has treated him. She finds him kinda down and commends him for sticking to his guns and not bowing to peer pressure, which Spongebob is glad about and glad that he an Sandy have worked out their schism, but he's a bit frustrated that nothing else sems to satisfy the crowd stating that it's as if they only want to hear one thing and that's it. This gets some gears turning in Sandy's head and she gets and idea which she whispers to Spongebob. He asks if she's ok with him doing that but she says that it was her idea and if all goes to plan, the crowd will be begging for new material.

We cut back to the stage where the crowd is getting impatient for Spongebob to come back out with Mr. Krabs considering just calling the stand-up night early, until Spongebob comes back out and apologizes to the crowd and says he'll give them what they want (Sandy has also returned to her seat by this time). So he tells the squirrel joke and the crowd roars with laughter glad to finally get what they came to hear, then he tells again the exact same way and while the crowd still laughs they're a little confused, then he does it again, and again, and again over and over delivering the exact same joke as the crowd goes from mild laughs to polite chuckles to silence to outright groaning, with the notable heckler from before angrily yelling at Spongebob if that's the only joke he has, to which Spongebob fires back that he's only giving the crowd what they want while Sandy watches on with a conniving grin, knowing that her and Spongebob's idea has worked. The audience outright begs him to tell some other joke which Spongebob does take a bit of pride in, but then comments that his time at the stand is up and leaves the crowd unsatisfied, with Mr. Krabs grumbling the background about how he knew the stand-up night was a bad idea. After the crowd filters out when the restaurant closes, Spongebob and Sandy meet back up and Spongebob apologizes for all the stuff he said about her and squirrels, which Sandy forgives him for since he clearly realized it was wrong and that the crowd wouldn't appreciate Spongebob's true style of humor anyways, he laughs and tells a bad joke in response which gets her to laugh too and the episode ends with her jokingly saying maybe she should go up on stand-up night, which she says she'll pass on.
