Router VPN speeds and reliability: test before buying hardware

Router VPN setups are useful, but they add hardware limits. A router can be fast for normal traffic and still slow for encrypted tunnel traffic.

Before buying or flashing

• Test the VPN on one device first.
• Check the router CPU during a speed test.
• Try a conservative tunnel MTU if pages hang.
• Enable MSS clamping if your firmware supports it.
• Compare wired and Wi-Fi clients.
• Test one nearby server and one farther server.

If device-only VPN is fast but router VPN is slow, the router is probably the bottleneck. If both are slow, server fit or network path is more likely.
