First Telescope?

Hello All,

l've always been infatuated with outer space as a kid but never had the money to buy a telescope. Now, I see there are many options, and I don't even know what to look for.

How do most telescopes differ from one another? Do you have any recommendations for someone buying their first? Do I need additional equipment besides a telescope to see galaxies/planets?

Please, let me know. And thank you in advance :). My phone just won't cut it anymore.
