Looking for career advice - tech to finance

HENRY Careers

Looking for perspectives from people who've made the jump.

I'm currently in a senior technical IC role in tech/consulting. My work has evolved from classical data science into AI architecture, product engineering and enterprise AI, and I have a lot of autonomy, broad scope and fully remote working.

I'm interviewing for a senior leadership role in a large financial services organisation. The package would be around £160k-180k TC (vs ~£118k base currently, with a review due), but the bigger consideration for me is the nature of the work rather than the money.

The trade-offs I'm thinking through are:

  • Moving from consulting into a large regulated enterprise.
  • Going from fully remote to hybrid.
  • Potentially giving up some breadth/autonomy for greater organisational influence.
  • Whether the long-term career trajectory is actually stronger in financial services, especially with AI becoming more embedded in core business functions.

For those who've made a similar move:

  • What surprised you most?
  • Did you find the slower pace frustrating, or did you appreciate the scale and complexity?
  • Did you miss consulting/start-up style work?
  • Has hybrid working been worth the trade-off?
  • Looking back, would you make the same decision again?

I'm less interested in whether one is objectively "better" and more interested in hearing what people wish they'd known before making the move.

I genuinely enjoy being a builder and have been fortunate to work on some fantastic AI products over the last few years. Increasingly though, I'm finding I'm more interested in shaping the systems, standards and organisational capability around those products, and I'm trying to work out whether a larger enterprise is the right next step.
