BYO SUP?

Okay, perhaps this is a ridiculous question but has anybody brought their own standup paddle boards when traveling out west via plane?

We are coming from the east coast with a family of four. We typically do carry-on only, which means we do have the option for a free checked bag thanks to our airline credit card, so the SUPs would be checked luggage. We already have the inflatable boards and they pack up into a zip-up bag that could likely store the life jackets too. Once we arrive, we will have a minivan and therefore space for it. But obviously it’s extra effort and maintenance to inflate and deflate them and just lugging around wet boards.

At home we have one adult and one kid on each board, and it works out great. Had previously planned to just rent a kayak or canoe when we get there, but if we do that a couple times and need at least two each time to cover all four of us (sometimes when we’ve rented SUP in the past places will only allow one per person). Friends of ours will be driving over to meet us in our Yellowstone and Grand Teton leg of the journey and are bringing their own inflatable raft, which made us consider the possibility.

So tell me if I’m being totally ridiculous or if it’s a half decent plan.
