Canon VS Fanon: Nesta and Elain never did any housework

Discussion

Fanon:

Nesta and Elain actually did chores while Feyre hunted, but because Feyre looked down on domestic tasks, she completely ignored their contributions and claimed they did absolutely nothing.

Canon:

No, they literally did nothing, and Sarah explicitly confirmed this from the very first pages of ACOTAR.

The Chopping Wood Incident: When Feyre returns from the freezing cold to a dying fire, Nesta is just sitting there wrapped in blankets. She literally refuses to chop wood because it would "ruin her fingernails" and claims her hands are too delicate for chores.

The Hunting Preparation Myth: Fanon loves to claim the sisters cooked Feyre's catches. But book one explicitly states Feyre usually had to skin, clean, and cook everything herself. She was genuinely surprised whenever they actually helped. Plus, Nesta calling the deer dinner "scraps" in a derogatory way proves she didn't lift a finger to cook it.

Tamlin’s Arrival Instructions: When Tamlin takes Feyre away, she doesn't leave cooking or household instructions for her sisters. Instead, she desperately explains to her father how to skin the meat and turn it into jerky so they won't starve. If Nesta or Elain had been handling the kitchen all along, Feyre wouldn't be teaching basic meat preservation to her disabled father.

The Filth and Poverty: The cottage is described as completely neglected. Feyre notes that if she doesn't handle the cleaning, washing, and basic maintenance, the house literally falls apart because neither sister does a thing.

Nesta’s Own Admission: In ACOSF, Nesta doesn't deny her past actions. She wallows in guilt because she knows she intentionally let Feyre starve and carry the family out of pure spite toward their father.

Also, think about it: if they both helped around the house, why the guilt? Why did Elain literally apologize? Didn't we read an entire book dedicated to Nesta’s intense guilt and trauma over how she treated Feyre? Nesta and Elain were initially written as flawed, bad sisters, and trying to erase that canon just ruins their stories. It completely throws Nesta’s growth into the trash and makes Elain’s apology and remorse entirely meaningless.

I felt the need to write this post because I’ve come across this claim a few times recently. When that happens, I actually start questioning myself like, 'Wait, is that really how it happened in the book?' because I have absolutely no recollection of what they're talking about, and I literally have to go back and check the text. If anyone else out there is experiencing the same confusion, I hope this helps.
