1st offense DUI - scared, need help choosing a lawyer [RI]
In Newport, Rhode Island, I was pulled over for a lane violation and they asked me to do a field sobriety test. I didn’t drink too much and I think I did fine but then they asked to do a breathalyzer and I refused so they arrested me on the spot. I didn’t realize it’s an auto arrest so I told them I’d take it but they said “too late”.
Then searching through my car, they found an open beer bottle and some liquor with the seal broken. I forgot about those bottles for literally two years, they’ve been in my car.
This is never happened to me before now. I’m really scared. I have a couple points on my license for a car accident a few years ago and for traffic violations so already I was in fear of suspending my license but now they’ve hit it with five civil violations, - refusing the tests; lane violation; on my phone; and first offense open container.
Then there’s the criminal case for the suppose DUI.
My mom got recommended a lawyer Robert Humphrey for $3.5k who seems well reviewed and told me he has close relationships with the prosecutor and is personal friends with the judge.
My dad, a former state trooper, got recommended a lawyer for only 2000, Neal Steingold, but he didn’t call me back the next day so seems slightly less proactive and that other lawyer said it’s a red flag how cheap he is and though he practices in Rhode Island, he’s based in MA and doesn’t have the same connections.
However, someone overheard my initial call, named Peter. He’s been arrested 36 times and told me as a first offender with a clean record, I should just get a public defender. all the lawyers will be doing the same thing which is removing the criminal record and just essentially pleading in some way with the civil ones.
It’s true that all the lawyers I talk to said the same game plan but I am scared. but my dad and Peter were like its a routine procedure and I’m overthinking it.
So the question is, which lawyer do you think I should go with and to what degree am I overthinking this? I’m freaking out. I just had a job opportunity of a lifetime and now I’m really scared it could be taken away. And I’m very broke, my dad would put up the money for a lawyer but he’s obviously not happy about it
