14-year-old cat with tartar buildup and apparent discomfort after eating
My cat Arthas is 14 years old and has been showing some discomfort after meals lately. He still eats normally, but something seems off right after he finishes, like he's bothered by his teeth or gums. He has lost a few teeth over the years, which I assume is somewhat expected at his age, but the remaining ones have visible tartar buildup. I'm attaching a photo so you can see the current situation. From what I can tell it doesn't look catastrophic, but I'm genuinely not sure what to make of it.
One thing worth mentioning: he has chronic kidney disease, with creatinine at 2.01 mg/dL in his most recent bloodwork. I know anesthesia for a professional dental cleaning carries additional risk in cats with compromised kidney function, so I'm trying to figure out whether that's still a viable option or if there are safer alternatives I should be looking at first.
Mostly I'm wondering whether this looks urgent based on the photo, how people weigh the anesthesia risk against leaving dental disease untreated in a CKD cat, and whether there's anything realistic I can do at home given that he has never been used to tooth brushing.
Any input appreciated.
