They really need to reduce the amount of content per Season.

General Discussion

This is something I have been afraid to express in this community since I don't want to be taken the wrong way.

Genuinely though, PM needs to cut the amount of content in each Season.

Gonna sound like an old man here for a sec. However, back in my days, the only things we got was a single Intervallo and a single Refraction Railway, and that Season lasted about three months.

Pardon my phrasing here, but since then, we have accumulated more "bloat" on top. To list them off, Two Intervallos instead of just one, Intervallo Bokgaks are now a thing(2 per Season), Refraction Railway Bokgak is a thing now also, Walps were also once never a thing nonetheless the idea that we have to have 2 per Season + also Walps having events is also new.

Seems few, right?

I want you to keep in mind that each of those things take up 2 weeks. Multiply everything by 2, add 1 month(the month of Canto release), add 1 month(the dead month before new Season), and if you want to be harsh, add 1 month(the month for new Mirror Dungeon and its features). Bare minimum, not taking in account Standard Fares or Seasonals, that is still like at least 5-6 months. And this is me being generous with considering only Season length.

If you include “extras” like Reflectrials and new custom Skins which don’t take up Season length but still require development time and effort, then the laundry list even gets worse.

To all of this above information, I have heard of a few arguments against it. Starting with:

  1. "Who cares?" AKA Content is Content.

Content is content, right? Who cares if a Season takes longer and longer to produce? As long as we get the "proper" amounts of content per Season.

On the surface, this would make sense, since it is not like people here really play Limbus full-time. What is the harm with letting the Season run its course? Just return in a few months, play a couple of other games, and forget about Limbus during that time if you are that impatient!

The problem with this line of thinking is twofold:

  • It is self-perpetuating.

Any new "content" to the Season is added to the list of expectations that you want a Season to have. So, you are basically making a circular argument.  A Season should be "long" because it needs to be "long".

Also, “content” is an illusion in the first place. Do you know what Season content is? This goes for all gachas, not just Limbus. Season content is – get this –… Stuff for you to do between the last major patch and the next major patch.

They are literally filler. By definition. The main aim for Project Moon is still the next Canto.

Granted, in Limbus, they are less filler since Project Moon at least tries to make each Intervallos and Walps somewhat relevant. However, Limbus wouldn’t explode if we didn’t have Hell’s Chicken, Miracle in District 20, Yield my Flesh, Timekilling Time, Nocturnal Sweeping, and Spring Cultivation.

I want to be clear, there is a difference between “nice-to-haves” and necessities. I like the above events. I enjoyed playing through them. They add to the experience of Limbus. However, Project Moon is the writer, they get to decide what Intervallos they need and what Intervallos they don’t(Canto 6 has practically 0 set-up).

This is just me picking apart Intervallos.

This goes for literally everything gacha games releases in between major story updates. They are for you, the consumer, to not forget about the game, to still be engaged.

If Project Moon could without fearing that players will become bored and leave the game or risking burnout, I imagine they would just beeline for the next Canto right after the last one.

  • You are not considering the bigger picture of Limbus

YOU might have no trouble waiting, but what do you think the season length inflation will do to the run of Limbus Company? Keep in mind that a year or two ago, KJH expected Limbus to go on for another ten years.

This estimate was made based on two things: The current Season length at the time, and the baseline assumption that they can squeeze in at least 2-3 Cantos per year.

What has happened to Season length since then? Oh right, we can now barely squeeze in 1 Canto per year.

(In fact, this is most likely true this year with the delay of Canto 10, unless they can somehow wrap up Season 8 in 4-5 months which is a physical impossibility as calculated above)

You can observe this problem for yourself. Last Season, PM wanted two Cantos per year both because 1 story update per year is a bad look for a gacha game and also that they were beginning to be left behind in their planned schedule. They desperately had to release it on 31/12, and on a Wednesday instead of the typical Thursday.

Either way, the main point is that that initial estimate is becoming less and less likely by day. Even if you anchor the Season length in place, taking the Season length of last Season as the default for the foreseeable future, you are already missing the mark not by a few months but by a few whole years.

The worst case(and honestly, more likely) scenario where the Season length continues to grow over time as KJH gets more ambitious(this will already happen next Season btw since the Autobattler is coming, requiring bug fixes and maintenance) will mean at least 15-20 years of Limbus, instead of the initial 10.

I want you to appreciate how ludicrous this is, since me using “years” a lot might have degraded the meaning of the word to you. Limbus will most likely be developed for at least another half a decade or another decade more than initially planned.

You, as the player reading this, cannot even guarantee to play the game a decade from now, nonetheless two. Now, imagine this from the studio’s side of things, working two decades on a game and it being smooth-sailing…. especially troublesome since KJH still hopes to develop new games when possible.

  1. “The studio will expand in the meantime! Season Length will get better as hiring picks up”:

My reaction is “How?”

What does “get better” mean? Preventing more delays?

Even if Canto 10 isn’t delayed to September, the Season length would still be comparable to last Season’s if not a bit more, and Project Moon spent more effort this Season to pack everything as efficiently as possible.

I want to be clear, this Season is basically the perfected version of what they can do with their current release schedule. This is literally the best Season length will ever be. There were almost no dead weeks, and they even managed to partially reduce Season length by stacking a Seasonal Banner on top of RR6.

To reiterate my point, getting more employees won’t improve this. They might help with delays, and they might help with releasing Mirror Dungeons out quicker instead of it taking a month. But, that is literally all I can think of.

If you want to improve Season length, there are only two ways to go from here for tangible improvements:

  • Stacking events and banners.

This is silly to even think about. Imagine releasing Intervallos with Walps, or Walps with Bokgaks, or Intervallos with Bokgaks. The biggest problem is that each of those events already have IDs and EGOs, so the workload would be immense to release simultaneously like this.

The only other piece of content that would even be OK for this is releasing Refraction Railways with Events paired, and Refraction Railway Bokgaks with events paired. They actually kind of did this by pairing Middle Outis with RR6, which is why we got a 2 week reduction in Season length.

So, at best, you reduce the Season length by 1 month. Not bad, but also not amazing. Certainly not enough to fix Season length.

  • Switching from releasing content every two weeks, to releasing content every 1 week.

Laughably far off. Theoretically possible with enough employees and good coordination, but to maintain the same level of ID/EGO/Events quality would require a dramatic upscale in hiring which would take at least several years given Kim Jihoon’s hesitant attitude(He is barely considering hiring 5-10 members, this option would need drastically more than that).

Conclusion:

All of this is to conclude… Yeah, they really need to cut something, anything.

Everybody in the community will hate it and feel sour about there being less content to consume, but it is just infeasible in the long run even with increases in employee hiring and efficiency.

(P.S I want to know how bad my karma becomes due to this)
