My family keeps calling me "the good son," but it's starting to feel like a burden.
Does anyone else feel trapped by being called "the good kid"?
I don't really know how to explain this, but I need some advice.
My family and relatives have always told me things like, "You're such a good boy," "We have high expectations from you," "You'll definitely do something great," or "You're the best among your siblings."
I know they probably mean it as encouragement, but over time it has started to feel like pressure instead of support. I constantly feel like I have to live up to the image they've created of me, and because of that, I don't feel like I can just be myself.
For example, until about three years ago, I had never even used swear words not in front of people, not privately, not even in my own thoughts. I always felt like I had to be "perfect" because that's what everyone expected from me. Later, after some personal experiences, I started changing, but I still feel like I'm holding myself back in many ways.
Even with my friends or cousins, I often can't be completely open because I'm worried about disappointing people or ruining that "good boy" image.
Has anyone else experienced this? How do you stop living according to other people's expectations and start living as yourself?
