Decoded: what the IIM Lucknow BS AI curriculum actually looks like, year by year
Everyone's talking about IIM Lucknow's new undergraduate programme but I haven't seen anyone actually break down the curriculum. So here it is.
Year 1 is pure foundation - linear algebra, calculus, probability, discrete math, Python, data structures. Solid, nothing surprising, very IIT-adjacent.
Year 2 is where it gets interesting — OOP, databases, ML and Deep Learning, and a course specifically on Foundation Models for Generative AI. That last one is rare even in postgrad programmes in India right now.
Year 3 is the real differentiator. They run Computer Vision, NLP, LLM Engineering, Recommender Systems, and Responsible AI alongside Marketing Analytics, HR Analytics, Fintech, and Digital Transformation Strategy. This is the layer where the "business" part of the degree actually shows up — not as an afterthought but as a full semester of applied work.
Year 4 is 4 electives (Agentic AI, Reinforcement Learning, Political Analytics, Sports Analytics are some options) and then 18 credits of project/dissertation. That's a significant research component for an undergrad.
The question I keep coming back to: does India's industry know what to do with a BS graduate from IIM Lucknow? Recruiters are used to the MBA lens when they see IIM. Will they see this as an IIM grad or as a tier-2 CS grad? That perception gap is the real risk for the first few batches.
TL;DR - curriculum is genuinely well-designed. The market perception risk is real and it's on the first 2-3 batches to establish what this degree means.
