Finally figured out electric bikes for adults — here's what i found

bought one based on reviews last year. the range was garbage. like, 12 real miles on a bike claiming 40. returned it and actually did the research this time.

did the comparison properly — here's what held up: gearandsteer.com/best-electric-bikes-for-adults

the short version of what i learned: the "peak wattage" number on listings is basically meaningless marketing. what actually matters is battery voltage (48V vs 36V) and whether the range claim includes the caveat "at pedal assist level 1 with a 120lb rider on flat ground." almost all of them do. real range is about half what they say.

two that stood out for different reasons:

1. Heybike Cityscape 2.0 — 500W nominal motor, 468Wh IPX6 battery, 50 miles claimed (probably 25-30 real). the battery is actually waterproof and comes off in two seconds for desk charging. this is the one i'd buy for a daily commute.
👉 Best for: apartment commuters who need to charge at work ❌ too heavy to carry up stairs every day

2. Gotrax R7 — fat tires, 750W, same range ballpark. comes with a basket and frame bag already on it. it's slower in traffic but handles gravel and light trail without a second thought.
👉 Best for: mixed terrain riders who hate switching bikes ❌ inefficient on pure pavement compared to a thinner-tire bike

full breakdown with specs and pricing at the link above — covers folding options too if storage is the main issue.

car camping or daily commuting? actually changes which one makes more sense
