Feeling Teacher Guilt - First Year AP Lang Scores
This year was my first year of teaching AP Lang.
My students had a pass rate of 73.6%, which I know is close to the national average, but I still feel bad. I mostly feel bad because I had 6 kids get a two, whereas three of them earned a 2, but the rest of them really tried in class. That is where I feel the most guilt honestly.
I am happy that they performed above average in MCQs, on the RA thesis, and on Synthesis. It makes sense that my kids did above average on the MCQ because I have an amazing mentor who helped me drill MCQs, so I cannot really take any credit for that. My mentor also gets all of the credit for the RA thesis because she helped me with the template. I am really proud, though, that my students performed above average on Synthesis. However, we covered synthesis near the end of the year where I was feeling more confident in teaching AP (and also students seemed to understand it the best).
I just want to become a better AP Lang teacher, and I am hoping for advice or resources for teaching RA and Argument more thoroughly.
(I woke up from a dream with all of my students with 2s saying how I was the worst teacher they have ever had. So I now cannot go back to bed).
