My dog treats every visitor like a probationary employee

my dog has a three phase vetting process for anyone who enters the house and I've learned not to interfere.

First he stands in the hallway completely blocking the path to the living room. no wagging, no barking. Just standing there like a bouncer checking a nonexistent list (if you try to pet him immediately you fail).

Then comes shoe inspection. he escorts you to the kitchen at exactly three feet behind and watches you take your shoes off. My brother in law failed here because he tried to rush past.

Once you're seated he brings one specific toy and drops it on your lap. If you throw it your in. If you ignore it he takes it back and pretends you dont exist for the rest of the visit.

my landlord somehow passed on his first try. My mom, who has known him for four years, has never made it past the shoe part.
