Malediction means

a magical word or phrase uttered with the intention of bringing about evil or destruction; a curse

Now in JP, Malediction are called "Kodoku", written in 蠱 and read as こどく.

蠱 in JP to EN dictionary means

Riceworm\*\*\* or a curse to bring about disaster to someone

Which fits perfectly as the name of magatsumi's insects/arthropods themed abilities with the infamous feat of disaster level death of 200.000 mikaboshi citizen

But there's more,

こどく (Kodoku), can also be written with 蠱毒, which you can see adds 毒 (poison, evil, harm, malice), into 蠱.

What's interesting is that, 蠱毒 can mean:

A ritual done by sealing several venomous creatures into a jar, where they would devour one another until only one remains, the poison of the sole survivor or the poison that's left in the jar supposedly would be extremely potent.

Which is similar to what ariu was consuming (he crushed the venomous bugs, not letting them fight, but still, similar)

\*\*\*In dictionary, but if you search more in japanese, 蠱 means more of the sole poisonous creatures that survived the 蠱毒 ritual, not necessarily a riceworm, centipede is a more common 蠱 (called 蜈蚣蠱), that's why i had the arrow pointing 蠱/riceworm\*\*\* to the centipede in the picture

こどく can also be written in 孤独, which means solitude; loneliness; isolation...... Kinda foreshadows akemura's future because of malediction (imprisoned by his lonesome)

This multilayered meaning stacked upon a name (in kanji), the name's reading (in hiragana/katakan, i.e. furigana) and the other possible reading/kanji for the name's reading is quite common in Japanese version of manga, as you've probably seen in the meaning behind Yura's name in week two of this "fun fact during hiatus" series.

In short, malediction's JP name, Kodoku 蠱, is a perfect name for Magatsumi's insect/arthropods themed ability that's capable of causing disaster level of mass death, leaving the user (akemura) as a sole survivor. Truly a multi layered name. This why Japanese kanji is interesting, just one character can hold so much information, fun fact, and reference to the story.
