How do I start entering science fairs?

I'm conducting lab research this summer and I was hoping to use my knowledge to create some sort of medical device that improves an already existing one. Can an experienced person tell me more? I don't know much about tech but my CS friend does and we were hoping to create one together and enter a science fair together.
