Roast my first app: a home inventory where you photograph an item instead of typing it in
Solo dev, first real app, here for the roast. Tell me where it falls apart.
What it is: I kept starting a home inventory to get organized, then quitting, because every app made me type in each item by hand. So I built one where you do not type. You photograph an item, it fills in the details for you (name, brand, specs, tags), and you tap once to save. To find things later there is a keyword search and a Smart Find button that searches by what you actually remember. Everything is filed by where it physically sits, like "Storage Room, Box A."
Honest scope so the roast is fair:
- Android only, just launched.
- Local-first. It runs on an on-device database and needs no account to catalog, browse, or search.
- The photo scan runs through a cloud AI service that costs me money per scan, so the free tier has a banner ad and a scan allowance. You get a few scans logged out, then a Google sign-in opens the full free allowance, which keeps that tier sustainable.
- Bring your own AI key if you want the scans on your own dime. It is behind a small easter egg in settings.
Where I want you to swing hardest: is the photograph-instead-of-type idea actually worth it, or a gimmick? Does the free-then-sign-in flow annoy you? And is a home inventory something a normal person would ever keep up with, or am I fooling myself? Go.
