Why the lack of support for the BGS Union? We should be backing them to the hilt.
I've been completely blown away the past couple of days by the sheer number of people singing the praises of Xbox and celebrating the mass layoffs, calling the fired developers lazy or stupid at the same time. What is wrong with people? You play and enjoy the games these artists made for years, join their online spaces, then when they get screwed over you cheer and kick them while they're down? It's ghoulish.
Microsoft has aggregated a lot of game studios; they are a corporate conglomerate that should have been broken up a long time ago. All they are concerned with is increasing quarterly earnings as much as possible every quarter to increase the valuation of the company stock. Many of Xbox's other studios don't have union protection, which makes BGS' fight all the more important.
If this is a real community, we need to be supporting OneBGS as much as possible. I will be supporting the marches on 7/15, I encourage you to do the same in whatever way you can. Reach out to the workers and the developers who were affected, let them know that we are on their side.
At the end of the day, games are games. Yes, they're amazing creative endeavors; works of art; cathedrals that hundreds of talented people spend years building. But this is real life, and this kind of stuff really, really matters.
I stand with the artists.
