[Homebrew] What if any class could choose any subclass?

'14 Mechanic

I wanted to play a paladin with a bonded animal companion: a knight and his steed that grow in power with him. There's no clean way to do that in 5e. Beast Master is locked to Ranger, and multiclassing gets you a worse version of both.

So i created a simple house rule: any class can take a subclass from any other class. The goal is better roleplay, letting players build character concepts the standard pairings can’t express.

Subclass features that depend on another class's resource (rage, ki, channel divinity, pact magic, sneak attack) simply don't function but it is not a impediment on choice.

It kept growing, so we turned it into a doc anyone can use at their own table:

(Not able to send links - reddit keep disallowing the post)

Inside you'll find example builds with the fantasy each one unlocks, plus a compatibility matrix of all 123 official subclasses × 13 classes showing exactly what works, what's partial, and what breaks

The goal is to share with anyone that believe this can be interesting and wants to try it out
