Gum graft recovery process

Surgical Therapy (Gum/Bone Graft etc...)

I got my gum graft on July 1st on my bottom front teeth. I feel like i’ve been thrown to the wolves with how the healing process was going to be.

First few days, everything I had expected, swelling, trouble eating/drinking, speaking, pain, etc. Less then 24 hours after the surgery, I started getting blood clots on the graft site covering the entirety of the front and back of my teeth. I called my perio, just to be told it was normal and to just take it off if it wasn’t connected down to the gum. I spent the rest of the day and night getting rid of constant clots (which i wasn’t informed would happen, I’ve never had surgery so had no clue what to expect).

The pain, weakness and lack of motivation I felt had me unable to shower for days. I was told i’d only need 2 days off work after that procedure, but with the amount of pain and overall fatigue, I had to call out after those 2 days. Working a job with constant talking, movement, and holding your head looking down most of the day, i tried to go back the next day and also left early because of the pain and bleeding.

8 days later, I got to work and nearly 30 minutes into my shift, the roof of my mouth where the tissue was taken from, started bleeding profusely and nonstop. I had the retainer in, and it was seeping out the front and back of it. I ended up having to go home, and by the time I got home my mouth was basically clotted over and completely filled with the blood. When I took the retainer out blood and clots were just falling out of my mouth for 20 minutes straight. I was finally able to call and ask what happened, and they told me just to apply pressure for 10 minutes with gauze, and that it was just a torn suture and it’s really common for that to happen. It eventually stopped after 30 minutes of pressure and changing out gauzes.

This entire process has made me absolutely miserable and more depressed than i have been in YEARS. It has been so mentally challenging and so hard for me to even feel like I can get through this. I’ve been crying on and off for a week straight and have not left my house or my bed unless it’s to go to work. I just feel like I should have been informed about all the possibilities or how it can affect you, but all I got was one piece of paper with the basics of it for the aftercare, along with the fear of losing my job. When does it start getting better? Mentally and physically? It’s just been surprise after surprise and I’m tired of it. Does anyone have any other information or experience of what else could happen? I’ve used google for at least 50 different questions I’ve had since I feel like I received such a lack of information on this process.
