Wales' National Brands?
I've recently moved back to Wales after spending some time in Glasgow and then Dublin. I noticed that both Scotland and Ireland have essentially 'national brands', Scotland has Tunnocks, Tenants beer, Irn Brew, Ireland has Tayto, arguably Jameson's, and then obviously Guinness. I know some of these brands are no longer owned by companies based in these countries (Diego own Guinness, it might own Tennants as well?).
I personally cannot think of that many national Welsh brands (maybe I'm just thick!). Brains is very much South Wales' beer, and is maybe being eclipsed by Tiny Rebel, but Tiny Rebel isn't really marketing itself as Welsh (yes I know they have a beer called Cwtch and another called dwtty, but it's not quite the same), and Felinfoel is very much West Wales' beer. On sweet treats, while Wales has Welsh Cakes and bara brith, there's no dominant 'Welsh Cake brand'. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, keeping the Welsh cake experience authentic (and fresh!) to local bakers/your mamgu's kitchen is great! But I also enjoyed living in Scotland and having a Tennants as my go to beer etc.
So, does Wales, in your view, have national brands? If not - should we get behind some?
