"Link in bio" is costing you ~90% of your clicks. I ran the funnel math.
Count the taps between "I want this" and "I got it" with link-in-bio:
-
See the post, read "link in bio"
-
Tap your username
-
Land on the profile
-
Tap the bio link
-
Find the right link on a biolinks with 9 options
Every step in a mobile funnel loses roughly 30-50% of people. Stack five steps and single-digit percentages of the people who WANTED the thing actually get it. They didn't change their mind - they got lost.
Now the DM route: they comment a keyword, the link lands in their inbox, one tap. Two steps, and the second one happens in the least distracting surface Instagram has.
Three practical upgrades if you try it:
- Put the CTA in the first line of the caption AND pin it as a comment. Both surfaces.
- Use a specific keyword, not "yes" or "info" - a distinct word ("BLUEPRINT", "MENU") filters intent and avoids false triggers.
- Reply publicly to each comment too ("Sent! Check your DMs 📩"). It notifies them, tells everyone else the mechanic works, and adds another comment to the pile - which is more reach.
The bio link still has a job: evergreen traffic from your profile. But asking warm, in-feed intent to go find it is like answering the phone and telling the caller to email you.
Has anyone A/B tested the two directly? Would love to see your numbers.
