Is Aim Assist really that strong, or are people over exaggerating?

I play both M&K and Controller depending if I want to lean forward and lock in or just sit back in my chair. I always see people complaining about the aim assist and how it moves your reticle directly onto people with 0 delay like its aimbot. Sometimes I struggle to get my aim on target with controller, especially when im floating through the air and my aim is drawing circles around people. I played a ton of black ops 3, and feel like the aim assist was way stronger in that game. Is reddit just over reacting, or am I just washed?
