Realistic break up? (Or trouple?)

Hello!

I'm writing a fic in the TVD universe, with Caroline Forbes genderbent as Charles Forbes. In my story, Charles ends up dating Jeremy Gilbert instead of Bonnie. In the show, Jeremy cheats on Bonnie with the ghost of his dead girlfriend and I absolutely HATE this plotline. It's such a disservice to both characters, and it felt like a cheap excuse to make them break up. The reason Jeremy even sees said ghost is because he died and was resurrected.

In my story, Charles saves Jeremy before he gets killed, so no ghost-seeing for him.

However, I am planning another character as Charles' endgame romance (Kol Mikaelson), so I need Jeremy and Charles to break up at some point. My question is how, because their relationship as of now is a bit codependent and I have issues seeing them break up: Charles turned off his humanity (a vampiric ability in TVD) and turned it back on for Jeremy, so he's very attached to him. Jeremy thinks Charles is the only person who isn't trying to "fix" him and with whom he can be himself, so he feels alive.

For now my solutions are:

1. they don't break up and they have a polyam relationship with Kol over time

2. Jeremy dies permanently in a ritual sacrifice at the ends of Klaus. It drives Charles mad with grief for a time, but the issue is that Kol is Klaus' brother so him dating him seems a bit far-fetched. Like okay, Kol was sealed when Klaus did that so he's not responsible, but still strange. (Although it's TVD, and there isn't a single normal relationship in that show lmfao)

3. they break up??? For some reason???
