Why do drivers hate it when I cross the road?

So I'm crossing the highway road and non of the drivers stop. Then somebody blinks their lights, so I go in the middle in this yellow blob shape that nobody is going into. The first driver says "WTF are you doing?" and the next one that stops for me looks at me like lunatic. Where I'm from it is common to cross this highway road so why were they mad? There was no crosswalk place so I could only wait there. Did they want me to fly? I don't understand why they were mad I went into the yellow where they couldn't go. They have to go around it
