When installing a new ac, is it okay if one of the columns of its side vents are inside the wall and only have gaps for it?

Problem/Goal: I think my dad incorrectly installed my newly bought AC but he keeps convincing me that it’s fine until my AC stopped running due to overheat.

Context: I recently bought a new ac because my old ac already retired. My father installed it with the old metal frame for my old ac, however its size is not fit for my new ac to have all of its side vents outside of the wall.
