Would you rather a plugin constantly scan for file changes or use a gdextension you had to update?

discussion

I'm developing a plugin that I think will be extremely helpful for a lot of people, but it requires change tracking on the file system.

There are two approaches I can use for this:

  1. Every 3 to 5 seconds, do a manual scan of the file system in your project folder and compare it to an indexed file. This runs even when godot is minimized so the plugin can work in VSCode too.

  2. Use a gdextension to catch file changes

I currently have the first option working, and I don't see any associated performance issues at all, but I'm worried that might change with very large projects. File scanning isn't very resource intensive and happens almost instantly, but it kind of bothers me knowing it is running constantly.

A GDExtension sounds great but it has two negatives - you have to have a separate plugin for each platform (windows, mac, linux) and you have to upgrade the plugin every time Godot is upgraded.

Which approach would you prefer a plugin use? How much does upgrading your plugins when godot is upgraded bother you?
