Sharing a great overview of the architecture of a modern B2B sales cycle from Devan Batavia.
He explains that sales is fundamentally a mix of both art and science, and both sides of the equation can be actively learned and mastered. While the artistic elements rely on specific behavioral tactics, like leveraging open-ended questions during discovery, improving high-level metrics like ARR or sales cycle speed requires leaning heavily into the structured "science" of a pipeline. Batavia notes that a common misconception is conflating business development with a sales process. He draws a firm line between the two: business development is strictly about opening the door and initiating a relationship, whereas the sales process is the deliberate journey of winning over the customer and securing revenue.

Batavia maps out a standard sales framework, reminding founders that a successful funnel must adapt to the target customer rather than remaining entirely rigid. He breaks down the early mechanics of a deal into distinct actionable phases:

The 6-Stage Sales Process Breakdown
Outreach: Capturing customer attention and driving traffic to your resources (essentially a subset of marketing).

Qualification: Making sure you’re talking to the right person and verifying they actually have the pain point you solve.

Discovery: Uncovering specific pain points. Tip: Remember that Executives care about high-level costs/revenue, while End-Users care about day-to-day workflow efficiency.

Demo: Never give a cookie-cutter presentation. It needs to be dynamically adjusted based on the specific pain points you uncovered in the discovery phase.

Negotiation: Contract formalization and pricing alignment that happens throughout the cycle.

Close: The final hurdle. Keep in mind that for Enterprise clients, this gets incredibly complex due to procurement, legal alignment, and IT security reviews.
